What happens if you fail PSLE? Scores, re-sits and next steps for 2026

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

The PSLE has no overall pass or fail. What parents call failing is a PSLE Score that gives no Posting Group, or a weak AL in one subject. Here is exactly which scores those are, what a child can do next, and the 2026 dates for re-sits, NorthLight, Assumption Pathway, reviews and special consideration.

Failing the PSLE in Singapore usually means getting a PSLE Score that does not qualify for any of MOE's three Posting Groups. There is no overall pass mark. MOE gives no Posting Group to a score of 31 or 32, or to a score of 26 to 30 with AL8 (including Foundation grade C) in English or Maths. These children can repeat the PSLE or join NorthLight School or Assumption Pathway School. In 2025, 98.5% of candidates qualified for secondary school.

This guide sets out which results count as failing, what happens to a child with no Posting Group, what one weak subject changes, and how reviews of results and special consideration work. Every fact is from MOE, SEAB or the schools themselves, checked as of 7 Nov 2026.

Is there a pass mark for the PSLE?

No. Since 2021 the PSLE has used Achievement Levels instead of the old T-score, and there is no overall pass or fail. Each of the four subjects gets an AL from 1 (best) to 8, and the ALs are added into a PSLE Score from 4 to 32. What decides a child's next step is whether that score, and the English and Maths ALs inside it, fall within one of MOE's three Posting Groups.

The Standard AL bands run from AL1 for 90 marks and above down to AL8 for below 20. Parents often call AL7 or AL8 a "fail" in that subject, but MOE does not use the word and the result slip has no pass or fail line.

Which PSLE scores give no Posting Group?

Two kinds of result give no Posting Group. The first is a PSLE Score of 31 or 32. The second is a score of 26 to 30 where English or Maths is AL8, or Foundation grade C, which MOE counts as AL8. MOE's own score calculator says a child needs 26 to 30 and "AL 7 or better in both English Language and Mathematics" for Posting Group 1, the band for the highest scores.

The English and Maths rule only applies at 26 to 30. MOE's calculator puts a score of 25 or better in a Posting Group whatever the English and Maths ALs are. Our Posting Groups guide explains how each group starts Secondary 1.

Worked examples

These use MOE's rules exactly. Foundation grades A, B and C count as AL6, AL7 and AL8 for posting.

Ben and Chloe show why one very weak subject is not the same as failing the PSLE. Aisha and Dev show the case that matters most: one AL8 in Maths or English when the total is 26 to 30.

How many children do not qualify for secondary school?

Very few. MOE reported that 37,926 Primary 6 students sat the PSLE in 2025 and 98.5% were assessed suitable for secondary school. That leaves about 1.5%, or roughly 570 children, with no Posting Group. In 2023 the figure was 98.4% of 38,088 candidates. The 2026 figure will come with the results release in late November.

What happens if my child gets no Posting Group?

A child with no Posting Group has three routes, all from MOE. They can repeat Primary 6 and re-sit the PSLE the next year. They can apply to NorthLight School. Or they can apply to Assumption Pathway School. Both schools teach through hands-on, practical learning and lead to the ITE Skills Certificate (ISC) after four years. After only one PSLE attempt, MOE considers these applications on the primary school principal's recommendation.

  1. Results dayRead the four ALs and add them up. Check English and Maths if the score is 26 to 30.
  2. In a Posting GroupUse the S1 Option Form and submit up to six school choices within 7 calendar days.
  3. No Posting GroupTalk to the form teacher and principal on results day about the three routes.
  4. Route 1: re-sitRepeat Primary 6 and sit the PSLE again the next year.
  5. Route 2: NorthLight SchoolRegister online from 8am on results day, by 12pm on Monday 30 November 2026.
  6. Route 3: Assumption Pathway SchoolApply through the school's online form for January 2027 entry.
  7. January 2027Start Secondary 1, a repeated Primary 6, or Year 1 at NorthLight or Assumption Pathway.

RouteWho it suitsWhat it leads to2026 to 2027 timing
Repeat Primary 6 and re-sitA child who was close, for example AL8 in Maths with an otherwise steady score, or who was unwell during the yearA new PSLE result, then S1 Posting with the 2027 cohortPSLE again in 2027, results expected late November 2027
NorthLight SchoolA child who learns best by doing and is ready to move onITE Skills Certificate after 4 yearsForm 8am results day to 12pm Mon 30 Nov 2026. Starts Mon 4 Jan 2027
Assumption Pathway SchoolSame as NorthLightISC after 4 years, then an optional 2-year Assumption Pathway AcademyOnline form for January 2027 entry

There is no single right answer. A re-sit gives the child another year to reach a Posting Group, but it also means a year apart from classmates. NorthLight and Assumption Pathway were built for children who struggled with the PSLE format, and they move the child on with their age group.

Can my child repeat Primary 6 and re-sit the PSLE?

Yes. MOE says students not assessed suitable for secondary school "may choose to re-attempt the PSLE next year". In practice that means repeating Primary 6 and sitting the 2027 PSLE, with results expected in late November 2027. MOE also lets a child apply to NorthLight or Assumption Pathway after one, two or three PSLE attempts, so a re-sit does not close those doors.

Ask the primary school on results day how the repeat year will run, which class the child will join and what support the school offers. If the child took Foundation subjects, ask whether any subject should change level for the second attempt. Our Foundation vs Standard subjects guide explains how those levels are chosen.

A re-sit is most likely to help when one subject is the only barrier. A child on 28 with AL8 in Maths needs only one AL better in Maths, an AL7, to reach Posting Group 1 next time, assuming the other subjects hold.

How do NorthLight School and Assumption Pathway School admit students?

NorthLight School and Assumption Pathway School are MOE's two specialised schools for children who do not qualify for a secondary course after the PSLE. NorthLight takes students who sat the PSLE, did not qualify for Posting Group 1, 2 or 3, and are 13 to 15 years old on 1 January of the year they join. Both apply directly to the school, not through S1 Posting, and the windows open on results day.

NorthLight's fee for a Singapore Citizen is $168 a year, or $84 a semester. Permanent Residents pay $960 a year. Students on the MOE Financial Assistance Scheme pay nothing, and families on MSF ComCare get MOE FAS automatically.

Assumption Pathway School, January 2027 intake. Families apply through the school's online form, which is open now for January 2027 entry. The school did not list a closing date on its admission page as of 7 Nov 2026, so apply early and call the school to confirm. Citizen fees are $168 a year for Years 1 to 3 and $264 for Year 4. Assumption Pathway describes a six-year path: four years to the ISC, with vocational courses in Years 3 and 4, then an optional two-year Assumption Pathway Academy.

For 2027, expect NorthLight's form to open on PSLE results day again, in late November 2027. That is based on the 2026 pattern and is not yet published.

What happens if my child fails PSLE Maths or English?

An AL8 in Maths or English only removes the Posting Group when the total score is 26 to 30. At 25 or better, the child still has a Posting Group. An AL7 in Maths or English never removes it on its own. So a child who "fails" PSLE Maths with AL8 but scores 25 or better overall still goes to secondary school, and the weak subject mainly decides its starting level in Secondary 1.

AL8 means fewer than 20 marks out of 100 in a Standard paper. AL7 means 20 to 44 marks.

What happens if you fail one subject in PSLE, such as Science or Mother Tongue?

A very weak result in Science or Mother Tongue does not, by itself, stop a child from going to secondary school. MOE's English and Maths rule does not cover Science or Mother Tongue. What that AL does is add to the total score and shape the subject's starting level. For example, AL1 in English, Maths and Science with AL8 in Mother Tongue gives a score of 11, which is Posting Group 3.

For Mother Tongue, MOE lets a weaker result start at an easier level. A child in Posting Group 3 with AL7 or AL8 (or Foundation B or C) in Mother Tongue can take Mother Tongue at G1 or G2. A child in Posting Group 2 with that result can take it at G1.

Source: MOE, Full SBB secondary school experience.

How does a weak subject affect Sec 1 subject levels?

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, each subject in Secondary 1 is taken at G1, G2 or G3, with G3 the most demanding. The Posting Group sets the starting level for most subjects. The subject AL can then move English, Maths, Science or Mother Tongue up, or in some cases down. A weak AL never moves a subject above the group's usual level.

Posting GroupMost subjects start atSubject moved up ifSubject moved down if
3G3Already highestFoundation English, Maths or Science: may take G2 after talking to the school. Mother Tongue AL6 or Foundation A: G2. Mother Tongue AL7 to 8 or Foundation B to C: G1 or G2
2G2Standard AL5 or better: G3Mother Tongue AL7 to 8 or Foundation B to C: G1
1G1Standard AL5 or better: G2 or G3. AL6 or Foundation A: G2Already lowest

After Sec 1 starts, schools can move a subject up or down based on how the child is doing. MOE says a student who steps down a level may later take the subject at a more demanding level again "as they gain greater competence and confidence". In 2025, about 65% of Posting Group 1 and 2 students could take at least one subject at a more demanding level.

What does Foundation grade C mean?

Foundation grade C is the lowest grade in a Foundation subject, given for a mark below 30%. MOE grades Foundation English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue as A, B or C, and maps them to AL6, AL7 and AL8 for S1 posting. So a Foundation C in English or Maths counts as AL8, which removes the Posting Group when the score is 26 to 30.

Foundation gradeRaw markCounts as, for posting
A75 to 100AL6
B30 to 74AL7
CBelow 30AL8

The best a Foundation subject can add to the score is AL6. That is why a child taking two or more Foundation subjects is often near the 26 to 30 band, and why the English and Maths grades matter so much. A Foundation B in Maths is treated as AL7, which meets the Posting Group 1 condition.

Source: MOE, PSLE scoring system. Our Foundation vs Standard subjects guide covers how schools decide levels at the end of Primary 4 and Primary 5.

What should parents do on PSLE results day?

On results day, collect the result slip, add up the four ALs and check English and Maths if the score is 26 to 30. If the child has a Posting Group, plan school choices for the S1 Option window. If not, speak to the form teacher and principal before leaving school, and decide between a re-sit, NorthLight and Assumption Pathway within a few days, because NorthLight's form closes on Monday 30 November 2026.

What if the score is borderline in the S1 Option window?

The S1 Option window runs for 7 calendar days from 11.30am on results day and closes at 4.30pm on the last day. A child on 21, 22 or 25 must pick one of two Posting Groups before listing schools, and that choice applies to all six choices. MOE lets families change their choices any time before the deadline, and a child who submits no choices is posted to a school with vacancies near home.

For a borderline child, three habits help:

  1. Use all six choices. MOE's parent kit suggests a spread of schools with different cut-off points.
  2. Pick the Posting Group that fits the child, not the label. At 25, Posting Group 2 starts most subjects at G2, and Posting Group 1 starts them at G1. Under Full SBB, either can move up later.
  3. Look beyond cut-offs. CCAs, distance and programmes for hands-on learners matter for four years.

If the child has no Posting Group, MOE has not said whether an S1 Option Form is issued, so ask the primary school on the day. Note that NorthLight's registration closes at 12pm on Monday 30 November 2026, which may be before the S1 window ends.

Can PSLE results be appealed or rechecked?

Yes. SEAB lets candidates apply for a review of any subject they feel does not reflect their child's work. An independent senior marker, different from the original marker, re-marks the scripts and checks every mark entry. Families apply and pay through the primary school within five working days of results day. Applications cannot be withdrawn, fees are not refunded, and outcomes come within six weeks after the deadline.

What to know before applying:

  • Deadline: five working days from results day, so in the first days of December 2026. Ask the school for the exact cut-off. SEAB accepts no late applications.
  • Fee: charged per subject. SEAB's 2026 rules do not print the amount, so the school will tell you.
  • Scripts: SEAB does not return marked scripts.
  • Outcome: through the school, within six weeks after the deadline, likely mid-January 2027 for this year. If a grade changes, results are adjusted and a replacement certificate is issued.
  • How often grades change: after the 2022 PSLE, about 1.5% of candidates appealed their Maths result and one student's grade changed.

Because outcomes arrive after the S1 posting results on 18 December, a review cannot stand in for the S1 Option window. Submit school choices on the current result regardless. SEAB does not say how a changed grade is applied to posting, so ask the primary school before you pay.

What if my child was ill during the PSLE?

A child who missed a PSLE paper for a valid reason, such as illness, medical leave or compassionate reasons, can apply to SEAB for special consideration through the primary school. SEAB then awards a projected grade based on evidence, including the child's work in the other papers of that subject, school examinations and the school cohort's results. SEAB has said applications are judged on their merits so the grade is accurate and fair.

SEAB's 2026 rules also set what to do during the exam period:

  • If the child is unwell and cannot sit a paper, tell the school straight away and see a doctor.
  • Ask the doctor to write the diagnosis on the medical certificate or letter.
  • A child who is hospitalised or has a contagious illness, such as chicken pox or hand, foot and mouth disease, may still sit the paper if a doctor certifies them fit and the school asks SEAB before the paper starts.
  • A child absent without a valid reason gets an asterisk on the result slip marking the subject as missed without a valid reason.

If your child was ill and the school has not yet raised it with SEAB, ask the school at once.

How do I talk to my child after a poor PSLE result?

Start with the child, not the score. MOE's parent kit for 2026 asks parents to manage their own expectations, praise effort over outcome, discuss options openly and remind the child that the PSLE is one point in a long journey. A calm first conversation matters more than any decision made that afternoon, and most decisions can wait a day or two.

Practical ways to handle the first week:

  • Say it plainly. "We know you worked hard, and we will sort out the next step together."
  • Keep the comparison out of it. Siblings, cousins and classmates' scores will come up. Steer relatives away from them.
  • Watch for teasing. Remarks from peers, online or in person, can hurt more than the score. Tell the form teacher if it happens.
  • Give the child a say. If there is a choice between a re-sit and NorthLight, or between Posting Groups, listen to what the child wants.
  • Plan something unrelated. A sport, a day out or a new hobby helps the child see they are more than one result.

Source: MOE parent kit, Supporting our children after the PSLE (15 Oct 2026).

What is a calm plan for what comes next?

A calm plan has four parts: confirm the facts, choose a route, act before the deadlines and set up support for January. Most children who "fail" a subject still go to secondary school, so the plan is often about starting levels, not about whether the child moves on. Write the plan down so the whole family is working to the same dates.

  1. ConfirmAdd up the ALs and check the English and Maths rule. Read the Eligibility Letter.
  2. AskSpeak to the form teacher and principal on results day about levels, a re-sit or NorthLight and Assumption Pathway.
  3. DecideIn a Posting Group, choose six schools. With no Posting Group, choose a re-sit or a specialised school by 30 November.
  4. ReviewIf a grade looks wrong, apply for a SEAB review through the school within five working days.
  5. PrepareBuy uniforms and books after posting results on 18 December, and plan the December holidays gently.
  6. SupportIn January, watch the weak subject. Schools can move a subject up a level once the child is coping.

For later cohorts, the same rules apply as of 7 Nov 2026. MOE has not announced any change to the Posting Group ranges for the 2027 PSLE. MOE's Education Conversations, running from 2026 into 2027, include the role of the PSLE in Secondary 1 posting, but no decision has been made. Our Is PSLE being removed? guide tracks that review.

When does a tutor help after a weak PSLE result?

A tutor helps most when one subject is the barrier and the child has a clear next exam. That covers a child re-sitting the PSLE after an AL8 in Maths or English, and a child starting a subject at G1 or G2 in Secondary 1 who wants to move up a level. It helps less in the first week after results, when the child needs rest and a decision on the route.

For a re-sit, the useful work is the specific weak area, such as fractions and percentages or English comprehension, rather than the whole syllabus again.

Key terms

  • Achievement Level (AL): the grade from 1 to 8 given for each PSLE Standard subject, with AL1 the best.
  • PSLE Score: the four subject ALs added together, from 4 (best) to 32.
  • Posting Group: one of three bands, 1, 2 and 3, that MOE uses to post a child to secondary school.
  • Foundation subject: an easier version of English, Maths, Science or Mother Tongue taken in Primary 5 and 6, graded A, B or C.
  • G1, G2, G3: the three subject levels in secondary school under Full SBB, with G3 the most demanding.
  • S1 Option Form: the personalised form issued with PSLE results for listing up to six secondary schools.
  • ITE Skills Certificate (ISC): the qualification NorthLight and Assumption Pathway students work towards over four years.
  • Review of results: SEAB's re-marking service for PSLE scripts, applied for through the school.
  • Special consideration: SEAB's process for awarding a projected grade when a child missed a paper for a valid reason.

Common questions

What happens if you fail PSLE?

There is no overall pass or fail. A child whose score gives no Posting Group can repeat Primary 6 and re-sit the PSLE, or apply to NorthLight School or Assumption Pathway School.

What PSLE score is a fail?

MOE gives no Posting Group to a score of 31 or 32, or to 26 to 30 with AL8 or Foundation C in English or Maths. Every other score from 4 to 30 qualifies for a Posting Group.

What happens if I fail PSLE Maths?

An AL8 in Maths removes the Posting Group only when the total score is 26 to 30. At 25 or better, the child still goes to secondary school and starts Maths at the group's usual level or lower.

What happens if I fail PSLE English?

The same rule as Maths applies. AL8 or Foundation C in English removes the Posting Group only at a score of 26 to 30.

Can you go to secondary school if you fail one subject in PSLE?

Usually yes. One AL8 blocks secondary school only if it is in English or Maths and the total is 26 to 30.

Is AL7 a fail in PSLE?

No. AL7 means 20 to 44 marks, and AL7 in both English and Maths still meets the Posting Group 1 condition.

Is NorthLight School only for children who fail the PSLE?

NorthLight admits students who sat the PSLE and did not qualify for Posting Group 1, 2 or 3, aged 13 to 15 on 1 January of entry. Its January 2027 form closes at 12pm on Monday 30 November 2026.

Can my child re-sit the PSLE?

Yes. MOE says students not suitable for secondary school may re-attempt the PSLE the following year, which means the 2027 PSLE with results expected in late November 2027.

Can PSLE results be rechecked?

Yes. Apply for a SEAB review through the primary school within five working days of results day. The fee is charged per subject and is not refunded.

What if my child was sick during the PSLE?

The school can apply to SEAB for special consideration for a missed paper. SEAB awards a projected grade using the child's other papers and school results.

How many students fail the PSLE?

In 2025, 98.5% of 37,926 candidates qualified for secondary school, so about 1.5% did not.

Does a Foundation subject mean my child will fail?

No. Foundation A, B and C count as AL6, AL7 and AL8. Only a Foundation C in English or Maths at a score of 26 to 30 removes the Posting Group.
