There is no single best O-Level English tuition centre, but there is a clear best fit for each need. For one teacher from Sec 3 to the exam, Augustine's English Classes says its founder teaches every class. For a very small class, Learning Journey caps classes at 6. For a branch near almost any home and the lowest published fee per hour, Mind Stretcher runs 29 centres at about S$37 an hour. For step-by-step comprehension and situational writing drills on a budget in the west, look at The Thought Tailor. For a struggling student who needs a fixed system for every skill, EduEdge teaches its own formula method with two to three teachers per class. In the north, SmartLab (Woodlands) and Mind Stretcher (Woodlands, Yishun, Sembawang) are the closest picks.
Best O-Level English Tuition Centres in Singapore (2027): 10 Compared
Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy
We compared 10 secondary English tuition centres for Sec 3 and Sec 4, using only what each publishes. Fees, our per-hour estimate, class sizes, branches by region, trial terms and what the SEC G3 English paper tests in 2027.
We started from the centres that rank on Google Singapore for "O-Level English tuition centre", "secondary English tuition Singapore" and "Sec 4 English tuition", and the names that appear most often on the top comparison pages for those searches. From those we kept centres that passed four tests.
- Teaches Sec 3 and Sec 4 English as a programme. Each centre has a named secondary or O-Level English class, not just a general secondary package.
- Publishes its programme. What is taught, levels and branches are on its own site, so you can check them.
- Active branches for 2027. Each one lists current branches, a 2027 schedule or 2027 fees.
- A spread of needs. English specialists and multi-subject chains, every region, small and larger classes, and a range of prices.
We also avoided repeating the centres in our English tuition comparison for all levels, so seven of the 10 here are new. We did not include Google ratings. We could not read a dated rating from a source we opened for every centre, and a partial set would not compare fairly. The order below is not a ranking.
The 10 centres compared
Our per-hour figure is an estimate. We divide the published Sec 3 or Sec 4 lesson fee by the lesson length. Where a centre says GST is included we use that figure, and where it does not say, we use the fee as published.

The 10 centres in detail
Mind Stretcher
What is distinctive. A multi-subject chain with the widest network on this list: 29 centres plus online, three of them inside its Mind Sparks student care centres. Its Sec 4 English class is a weekly 2-hour lesson aimed at the national exam, covering essay writing, comprehension strategies, common errors and frequent essay themes.
Suits: a student who wants a class close to home or school, at the lowest published per-hour fee here. Less suited to: parents who want class size and teaching method in writing first, since neither is published for English.
Fees as published: S$294.30 a month on weekdays and S$316.10 at weekends for a 4-week month, or S$367.88 and S$395.13 for a 5-week month, all including 9% GST. There is a S$76.30 registration fee and a deposit of 5 academic weeks' fees per subject. Its fees page notes subject bundle discounts. The Sec 4 page shows a lower range of S$283.40 to S$305.20 a month, so confirm which applies for 2027.
Branches and nearest area: North: Sembawang, Woodlands (2) and Yishun. North-East: Hougang, Punggol (4 centres including One Punggol and Waterway Point), Rivervale, Sengkang (2), Seletar and Woodleigh. East: Marine Parade, Simei and Tampines. West: Bukit Batok (3), Bukit Panjang, Clementi, Jurong West, Westgate (Jurong East) and Yew Tee. Central: Bishan, Novena and Toa Payoh (2). Plus online.

Ask at the trial: How many students are in the Sec 4 English class? Is the class teaching the SEC G3 paper, with the video clip oral? Which monthly fee applies in 2027?
The Learning Lab
What is distinctive. A large multi-subject centre whose Sec 4 English class runs weekly practice at national exam standard. The programme lists comprehension and summary on themes such as society, technology and the environment, writing for purpose, audience and tone, grammar and editing drills, and timed practice tests with error reflection. Lessons are 2 hours with 13 students.
Suits: a student who keeps up in class and wants regular timed practice in a structured programme. Less suited to: a student who needs a lot of individual attention, as 13 is the largest published class here, or a family watching costs, since it has the highest published fee.
Fees as published: S$166.77 to S$179.85 a lesson, or S$667.08 a month on weekdays and S$719.40 at weekends for 4 lessons, including GST. These rates apply across Sec 1 to 4 English, Maths and Science. A term has 12 to 14 lessons. There is a one-time S$98.10 registration fee and a S$150 deposit per subject, refundable subject to its terms.
Branches and nearest MRT (our reading of the address): United Square (Novena), Serene Centre (Bukit Timah), Marine Parade Central (Marine Parade), Tampines Mall and Century Square (Tampines), The Seletar Mall (Sengkang), Woodleigh Mall (Woodleigh), Rochester Mall (Buona Vista), Choa Chu Kang Centre (Choa Chu Kang) and JEM (Jurong East), plus online.
Website: thelearninglab.com.sg
Ask at the trial: Is there a 2027 trial lesson, and what does it cost? How is the oral component practised in a class of 13? How often is a full timed paper set?
Aspire Hub
What is distinctive. A multi-subject chain with 16 branches that publishes a full 2027 course fee. Its secondary English class prepares for all four papers at G3 and at G2, following the 2020 English Language syllabus, including situational and continuous writing, narrative and non-narrative comprehension, and both oral parts. Classes are 4 to 8 students, in 2-hour lessons.
Suits: a family that wants a known course fee before visiting, and a G2 student moving up to G3 English. Less suited to: parents who want English-only specialists, as it teaches several subjects.
Fees as published (2027): S$1,428 for a 12-lesson Sec 3 or Sec 4 course in one subject, which is S$119 a lesson. GST is not stated. There is a S$80 registration fee. Deposit terms are not published. We have quoted the standard fee, not the time-limited offer shown on the same page.
Branches and nearest area: Central: Bukit Timah, Rochester Mall, United Square (Novena), Thomson and Alexandra Village. East: Paya Lebar Quarter, Bedok Mall and Parkway Parade. West: Jurong Point, West Mall and Hillion Mall. North-East: The Seletar Mall, NEX (Serangoon), Woodleigh Mall and Kovan. North: Lentor Modern. Plus online.
Website: aspirehub.com
Ask at the trial: Is GST added to the S$1,428? Is my child's class G3 only, or mixed with G2? How is marked writing returned?
Learning Journey
What is distinctive. An English specialist from preschool to GP with small classes and separate oral and essay courses. The secondary programme lists recount, reflective and expository essay drills, situational writing (letters, proposals, speeches and feature articles), editing, comprehension, oral practice and mock essay and comprehension exams. It has its own composition framework and an online platform that it says gives instant marking and weekly parent updates. Its oral course gives recorded feedback within 24 hours. The centre states that 90% of its O-Level students improve by at least two grades.
Suits: a student who needs to speak and write more in each lesson, especially before the oral. Less suited to: families in the west or north, as it has no branches there, or parents who want fees before calling.
Fees as published: not published. Families can start with 2 or 4 trial sessions, cost not published. Its FAQ gives a maximum class size of 6, while the O-Level page says 2 to 8 students per session, so ask which applies.
Branches: Serangoon North Avenue 4, Punggol East, Parkway Centre at Marine Parade (Marine Parade MRT) and Bukit Timah Shopping Centre (Beauty World MRT), plus live online classes.
Website: learningjourney.edu.sg
Ask at the trial: What is the fee per lesson and per month? Is the class capped at 6 or 8? How does the oral course prepare for the computer-based video clip oral?
EduEdge English Specialists
What is distinctive. An English-only centre that breaks the subject into 6 core skills and 32 sub-skills, each taught with its own formula. Classes are co-taught by 2 to 3 teachers, and the centre says it does not run individual or small-class tuition. Teachers complete up to 6 months of training before teaching. The centre states that 8 in 10 of its students reach B3, A2 or A1 for O-Level English, based on its own survey of 500 respondents.
Suits: a student who has been stuck at C grades and wants a fixed method to follow for each question type. Less suited to: a family that wants to sit in on a lesson before paying, since it does not offer trial lessons.
Fees as published: not published for secondary. Its FAQ gives an average of about S$280 for 4 primary lessons and S$400 for 4 JC lessons, without a secondary figure or lesson length. Instead of a trial, it offers a private 60-minute consultation and assessment session, which its secondary page describes as worth S$158.
Branches and nearest MRT (from the centre's pages): Serangoon Avenue 2 (Lorong Chuan and Serangoon), Chun Tin Road (Beauty World) and Parkway Centre (Marine Parade).
Website: eduedge.com.sg
Ask at the consultation: What does a month of Sec 4 English cost, and how long is each lesson? How many students share the 2 to 3 teachers? Is the consultation charged?
SmartLab
What is distinctive. A multi-subject centre whose secondary English programme names O-Level preparation, comprehension and situational writing as its focus. Its list covers editing, situational and continuous writing, visual, narrative and non-narrative comprehension, summary, listening and oral communication. It has branches in the north at Woodlands and in the north-east at Kovan.
Suits: a Woodlands, Kovan, Bishan or Marine Parade family who wants O-Level English alongside other subjects at one centre. Less suited to: parents who want fees and class size in writing before visiting, since neither number is published.
Fees as published: not published. Trial classes are offered, cost not published.
Branches and nearest MRT (from the centre's page): Bishan Street 23, opposite Catholic High, Hougang Street 21, beside Kovan MRT, Parkway Centre at Marine Parade (MRT Exit 1) and Woodlands Street 82, opposite Woodlands North Plaza.
Website: smartlab.com.sg
Ask at the trial: What are the fee and class size? Is the course built around the 2027 SEC G3 paper? How often is situational writing marked?
The Thought Tailor
What is distinctive. An English and GP centre with highly structured, skills-based lessons taught in a spiral. Its home page lists 12 types of O-Level comprehension question and 14 persuasion techniques for situational writing, drilled step by step. It runs mock tests and WhatsApp support and has a financial assistance scheme of up to a 50% fee waiver for eligible students.
Suits: a student who loses marks through not knowing what a question wants, and a budget-conscious family in the west or centre. Less suited to: families in the east, north or north-east, as there are no branches there.
Fees as published: S$95 a lesson for Sec 3 and Sec 4 at a centre and S$90 online. Every Sec 3 and Sec 4 slot shown runs 2 hours. GST, registration and deposit are not stated.
Branches and nearest MRT (our reading): Jurong East (Jurong East), Novena (Novena) and Bukit Timah (Tan Kah Kee), plus online.
Website: thethoughttailor.com
Ask at the trial: Is GST added to the fee? How many students are in the Sec 4 class? Are the 12 comprehension question types updated for the SEC paper?
illum.e
What is distinctive. An English, GP and humanities centre that teaches with scaffolded "thinking frames" for language techniques in comprehension and for the oral. It writes its own mock examinations and offers consultations before oral exams. The centre states that 90% of its students achieve an A or improve by 3 to 4 grades after joining.
Suits: a student who freezes on "language for effect" questions or on the oral, and families who want secondary English and GP at one centre. Less suited to: families in the north, as there is no branch there.
Fees as published: S$90 per 2-hour upper secondary session and S$80 at lower secondary. GST, class size, registration and trial terms are not stated.
Branches and nearest MRT (our reading of the address): Jurong East, Novena, Bukit Timah (Beauty World), Parkway Centre (Marine Parade), Hougang and Tampines.
Website: illum.education
Ask at the trial: How many students are in the Sec 4 class? What does a thinking frame look like for the Planned Response? Is GST added?
Augustine's English Classes
What is distinctive. A one-branch centre founded in 2004, where the founder teaches every class himself, with no rotating tutors. Classes are capped at around 8. For Sec 3 and Sec 4 it teaches fixed structures for argumentative and discursive essays, step-by-step analysis of tone, bias and purpose, timed summary and grammar work, and oral practice in defending a view. The centre states that 82% of its students improve by at least 2 grades within 6 to 9 months.
Suits: a student who wants the same experienced teacher from Sec 1 to the exam and then GP. Less suited to: families far from the east, or anyone who wants fees before calling.
Fees as published: not published. The trial is a place at no charge inside a regular lesson.
Branch and nearest MRT (our reading of the address): 86 Marine Parade Central (Marine Parade).
Website: augustineenglishclasses.com
Ask at the trial: What is the fee per lesson and per term? How are the essay structures adapted for the four SEC topics? Who covers a class if the founder is away?
Mavis Tutorial Centre
What is distinctive. A multi-subject chain running since 1986, with 17 branches and a heavy presence in Sengkang and Punggol. Its secondary English programme covers grammar, composition, comprehension, vocabulary, oral skills and preparation for the national exam. Students get worksheets, revision booklets, practice papers and past-year papers, with regular mock exams to track progress. Classes run once a week, with revision add-ons at set points in the year.
Suits: a family in the north-east who wants English and other subjects at one nearby centre. Less suited to: parents who want fees, class size and lesson length before visiting, since none is published for secondary English, or families in the centre, as there is no central branch.
Fees as published: not published on its current pages. A trial at no charge is booked through its contact page.
Branches and nearest area: North-East: Anchorvale, Buangkok, Compass One and Rivervale (Sengkang), The Seletar Mall, Kovan, Punggol Plaza, Woodleigh Mall and Ang Mo Kio Hub. East: Bedok Mall, Kinex (Paya Lebar), Pasir Ris Mall and Tampines. West: Jurong East, Jurong Point and Lot One (Choa Chu Kang). North: Woodlands.

What the SEC English paper actually tests
From 2027 the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) replaces the O-Level and N-Level. Students who would have sat O-Level English (1184) now sit G3 English Language, syllabus K300. It is still graded on the 9-point scale from A1 to 9, and A1 to C6 count as passes. The four papers are below, from SEAB's 2027 K300 syllabus.
| Paper | What is in it | Marks | Weighting | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Writing | Section A editing (10), Section B situational writing of 250 to 350 words from a visual (30), Section C continuous writing of 350 to 500 words on one of four topics (30) | 70 | 35% | 1 h 50 min |
| 2 Comprehension | Section A two short texts, one visual (5), Section B a narrative text (20), Section C a non-narrative text plus an 80-word summary (25) | 50 | 35% | 1 h 50 min |
| 3 Listening | Section A varied tasks, recordings heard twice (22), Section B note-taking, heard once (8) | 30 | 10% | About 45 min |
| 4 Oral | Part 1 Planned Response of up to 2 minutes to a video clip and prompt (15), Part 2 Spoken Interaction with the examiners on a related topic (15) | 30 | 20% | About 20 min including 10 min preparation |
- of the final result for each comprehension mark
- 0.7%
- for each writing mark
- 0.5%
- for each oral mark
- 0.67%
- for each listening mark
- 0.33%
The weightings do not follow the raw marks, so they change where tuition time should go. One comprehension mark is worth more than one writing mark, and an oral mark is worth twice a listening mark. The oral is now taken on a computer, which a class has to practise, not just discuss. G2 English (K200) uses the same four papers with shorter word limits.
- 4 Jan 2027Term 1 startsThe SEC year begins. A good time to fix the weakest paper from Sec 3.
- Jul 2027 (expected)Oral and listeningSEAB holds oral and listening before the written papers. In 2026 the O-Level English orals ran 13 to 17 July.
- Sep 2027English written papersSEAB says SEC English and Mother Tongue written papers are held in September. In 2026 O-Level English Paper 1 and 2 were on 19 October.
- Jan 2028ResultsSEAB releases SEC results in January of the following year.
The written exam is about a month earlier than in 2026, so school prelims and the last tuition term are likely to move forward too. Our guides go through each task in depth: SEC comprehension and summary, SEC situational writing and the SEC English oral exam. Our writing and oral checklists are a one-page version to print, and our SEC grading guide explains grades and passes.
Centre, home tutor or online?
| Point | English centre class | One-to-one tutor, at home or online |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per hour | About S$37 to S$90 from the published fees above, shared with the class | S$35 to S$95 at Sec 3 and Sec 4, from our rate card, by tutor type |
| Who sets the pace | The class programme | The tutor, around your child's weakest paper |
| Writing feedback | Varies, so ask to see marked scripts | Each script can be gone through in the lesson |
| Oral practice | One of many students per lesson | Every lesson can include a timed Planned Response |
| Best for | A student who is keeping up and gains from timed practice with peers | A specific weakness, a big grade gap, or a student who will not speak up in class |
A class is usually the cheaper way to get regular timed practice. A one-to-one tutor costs more per hour at the top end but spends the whole hour on one student. Our pricing page has the full TSS rate card.

How to choose
- Find the weakest paperLook at the last marked school exam. Comprehension, writing and oral each need a different kind of class, and comprehension carries the most weight per mark.
- Check the class teaches the 2027 paperAsk for G3 K300 by name, with the computer-based video clip oral and September written papers, not a generic "O-Level" course.
- Work out the real costAdd registration, deposit and GST to the lesson fee, then divide by the hours. The table above does this for the centres that publish fees.
- Bring a marked script to the trialA recent comprehension or essay lets the teacher work on your child's real errors.
- Ask for a plan to the examA good centre can say what each term covers before the September papers and how progress is tracked.
At the trial, check these five things:
| Check | A good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Marked work | Comments that name the problem and show a fix, and a rewrite the next week |
| Who talks | Your child writes or speaks for most of the lesson |
| The right paper | G3 K300 (or G2 K200), four continuous writing topics, an 80-word summary |
| Oral | A timed Planned Response to a video clip, then a discussion, practised regularly |
| Progress record | Marks by paper and section, dated and shared with you |
One warning sign is model essays to memorise. Continuous writing offers four fresh topics and situational writing is built on a new visual each year, so a memorised script rarely fits. A centre teaching 10 or more students should also appear in MOE's private schools search, though registration is not a mark of quality.
If one-to-one sounds right, our O-Level English tuition page explains how we match tutors to the SEC paper, and our Sec 4 English tuition page covers the exam year.
Common questions
Which is the best O-Level English tuition centre in Singapore?
It depends on the need. From our comparison, Augustine's English Classes offers one teacher for every lesson, Learning Journey has the smallest published class at 6, and Mind Stretcher has the most branches and the lowest published fee per hour.
How much does Sec 4 English tuition cost at a centre in 2027?
From the fees we read on 8 November 2026, a Sec 3 or Sec 4 English class costs about S$37 to S$90 per class hour. Five of the 10 centres do not publish secondary English fees.
Is there still an O-Level English exam in 2027?
No. From 2027 the SEC replaces the O-Level, and O-Level English becomes G3 English (K300). The papers, marks and 9-point grades stay close to the old O-Level.
When is the SEC English exam in 2027?
SEAB says the English written papers are held in September, with oral and listening before them. SEAB had not published exact 2027 dates on 8 November 2026.
What class size is best for Sec English tuition?
Smaller classes give more speaking and marking time. Learning Journey caps classes at 6, Aspire Hub runs 4 to 8, Augustine's English Classes about 8 and The Learning Lab 13.
Which paper should English tuition focus on?
Usually comprehension. It is 50 marks but 35% of the result, so each mark is worth 0.7%, more than a writing or listening mark.
How is the SEC English oral different?
It is taken on a computer. Students get a video clip and prompt, prepare, give a Planned Response of up to 2 minutes and then discuss a related topic with the examiners, for 30 marks and 20% of the result.
Do these centres offer trial lessons?
Most do. Augustine's English Classes gives a trial at no charge inside a class, Mind Stretcher lists a week of trial classes for S$107.91 and Learning Journey offers 2 or 4 trial sessions. EduEdge offers a consultation instead of a trial.
Is a centre or a home tutor better for Sec 4 English?
Neither in general. A class suits a student who is keeping up and needs timed practice, while one-to-one suits a specific weakness such as summary, essay structure or oral confidence.
How much is one-to-one Sec 3 or Sec 4 English tuition through TSS?
From our rate card, S$35 to S$95 an hour, depending on whether the tutor is part-time, full-time or an ex-MOE or MOE teacher. The same rates apply at home or online.
