Best History Tuition Centres in Singapore (2027): 10 Compared

Written and reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · editorial policy

Ten history tuition centres in Singapore side by side: published fees turned into a per-hour cost, class sizes, branches, trial terms and questions to ask, plus what the 2027 SEC History, Combined Humanities and H2 History papers actually test.

The best history tuition centre is the one that fixes the part of the paper your child loses marks on. For a centre that teaches nothing but History, from Sec 1 to H2, look at Herzen Centre for History (online). For H2 History taught by one tutor in small groups, JC History Tuition in Bedok North caps classes at 6, and The Humanities Clinic (East Coast, Woodlands, Zoom) runs JC classes of up to 6. For the smallest class, Ancourage Academy (Bishan, Woodlands) states 3 to 6 students and also runs H1 and H2 History. For a struggling Combined Humanities student who wants a former MOE Humanities head of department, The Urban Historian teaches Social Studies and the History elective online. Near the east, The Humanities Clinic is on East Coast Road and JC History Tuition is a short walk from Bedok MRT. The lowest published fee is The Urban Historian's S$290 for four lessons, about S$48 an hour.

History tuition is harder to shop for than Maths. Fewer centres teach it, many list it only under "Humanities", and a Social Studies class is not the same as a History class. So this guide checks the things that matter for History: which course the class follows (Pure History, the History elective with Social Studies, or H1 or H2), who teaches it, how many students share that tutor, and what an hour really costs. Every fact was read on the centre's own website on 8 November 2026. Where a fact is not on the centre's site, we say "not published" rather than guess.

This page is about History and Social Studies. For the other humanities, see our geography tuition centres compared and our literature tuition centres compared.

How we chose these centres

We searched Google for "history tuition singapore", "o level history tuition", "combined humanities history sbq tuition", "h2 history tuition" and "social studies tuition centre", and noted the centres that rank and the ones other History listicles name. We then kept centres that pass all four tests below.

  1. Teaches History by nameA History class, or a Humanities class with the History elective, not only Social Studies or Geography.
  2. Publishes its programmeIts own website shows at least one of: the fee, the class size, the timetable or the named History tutor.
  3. Runs active branches or live classesIt lists a current branch or live online classes, with a 2026 or 2027 timetable or registration.
  4. Spread of area, price and styleTogether, the 10 cover specialists and multi-subject centres, on site and online, secondary and JC.

All facts were checked on 8 November 2026. Fees often change in January, so confirm the current figure before you pay. No centre paid to appear here, and the detail section is in alphabetical order, not a ranking. Some names on other lists were left out because we could not read a History programme on their own sites: two centres' websites did not load, one Economics centre named on a History list teaches only Economics and GP, and one multi-subject chain's site lists no History class.

The per-hour figure is our own estimate. We divided the published fee by the published or timetabled lesson hours. Where a centre does not publish its fee or lesson length, we could not work it out.

The 10 centres in detail

Ancourage Academy

What is distinctive. A multi-subject centre with one of the widest History menus here. Its Humanities page explains the codes for Pure History (K330) and the History elective of Combined Humanities (K336), and it has course pages for Sec 2 History, Sec 3 and Sec 4 Elective History at G2 and G3, and JC1 and JC2 H1 and H2 History. Every group is 3 to 6 students and each lesson is 2 hours. Classes run on request rather than on a fixed weekly timetable. All worksheets are included. The founder and academic director is Min Hui.

Suits: a student who needs to be questioned every lesson, or a JC student who wants a small H1 or H2 group. May not suit: a family that wants a price before calling, since fees are quoted on request, or a student who wants a fixed weekly slot.

Fees as published: Not published. The course pages say there are no material fees. The standard trial price is S$18, which the site currently shows as waived.

Branches: 152 Bishan Street 11 #01-215 (about 10 minutes' walk from Bishan MRT). Vista Point, 548 Woodlands Drive 44 #02-16 (Woodlands South MRT is the nearest station). Online classes are also offered.

Website: ancourage.academy

Ask at the trial: What is the fee per lesson for my child's exact course? Is the class Elective or Pure History, G2 or G3? For JC, when does a new H2 group open?

Herzen Centre for History

What is distinctive. The only centre here that teaches History and nothing else. Its head teacher, Anthony Choong, lists seven years of teaching History and a distinction for his H3 research thesis, and a second teacher, Steve Chang, takes lower secondary. The 2026 timetable has Sec 1 and Sec 2 on weekday evenings, O-Level Elective History on Saturday and Sunday evenings, Pure History on Saturday at noon, and three H2 History slots at the weekend. N(A) and H1 classes are timed on request. Lessons are taught online on Google Slides, and the centre's online page says all its classes are held online.

Suits: a student who wants a History specialist from Sec 1 to JC2, at a simple hourly price. May not suit: a family that wants a classroom, or one that wants to know the class size for certain, since the home page says no more than 6 and the about page says no more than 5.

Fees as published: S$50 an hour, with each lesson typically 2 hours, so about S$100 a lesson. Registration, deposit and billing terms are not published. The trial is a 30-minute one-to-one lesson at no charge.

Branch: Online. The site gives no street address.

Website: historycentre.sg

Ask at the trial: How many students are in my child's slot? Has the course been updated for the 2027 SEC papers? Who marks the essays, and how quickly?

illum.e

What is distinctive. An English and Humanities centre whose History programme is led by Ivan Ann, its Humanities and History Lead, who is MOE-trained, holds a PGDE and lists about ten years of teaching History and Social Studies. It teaches History from Sec 1 under Full Subject-Based Banding, at G1, G2 and G3, and O-Level History for Sec 3 and 4. Social Studies is a separate class, in groups of around 8, at the Jurong East campus. The centre states that it has "a track record of moving students into higher grade bands".

Suits: a student who wants a named, MOE-trained History lead and a choice of six campuses. May not suit: a JC student, since H1 and H2 History are not listed, or a Pure History student, since the History page does not mention Pure History.

Fees as published: S$80 for a 1.5-hour Upper Secondary lesson, for History and for Social Studies. Lower Secondary fees, registration and trial terms are not published. Free one-to-one consultations with tutors are offered between lessons.

Branches: Jurong East, Novena, Bukit Timah, Parkway (Marine Parade), Hougang and Tampines. The History page does not say which campuses run History.

Website: illum.education

Ask at the trial: Does Ivan Ann teach this class? Which campus runs History at my child's level? How many students are in the slot?

JC History Tuition

What is distinctive. A one-subject centre for H2 History (9174), taught by Mr Justin Ng, who has taught A-Level History since 2013. Classes are capped at 6 and run on site or live on Zoom with the same materials and marking. The JC2 programme is an 11-lesson final revision run from late September, ending with a review of each paper days before it. The JC1 programme includes topical lessons and mock tests on the Cold War and essays. The page names former students from several JCs who scored an A for H2 History.

Suits: a JC student in the east who wants one H2 History tutor and a fixed revision plan. May not suit: a secondary or H1 student, since only H2 History is taught.

Fees as published: JC1 S$400 for four 2-hour lessons. The JC2 fee, registration and deposit are not published. A trial lesson is offered for JC1 and JC2, with its cost not published.

Branch: Block 205 Bedok North Street 1 #01-365, a short walk from Bedok MRT. Live lessons on Zoom.

Website: jchistorytuition.com.sg

Ask at the trial: What does the JC2 programme cost? How many essays are marked each month? Is the class Paper 1, Paper 2 or both?

learnMOJO

What is distinctive. An online-only programme for Social Studies and the History elective, taught by former MOE teachers in groups of up to 5. Sec 3 and 4 have a 1-hour live lesson each week for both subjects, or every two weeks for one, plus up to 45 minutes of set practice, and every lesson is recorded. Sec 1 and 2 take History and Geography, and the Sec 3 and 4 course is designed for G3 students. The centre states that around 70% of its students get distinctions.

Suits: a busy student who works well online and wants marked practice between short lessons. May not suit: a student who wants a classroom, a longer lesson, or Pure History or H2, which are not offered.

Fees as published: Only a promotional price for 2027 is published, so we have left it out. A S$80 registration fee applies. After a minimum of 15 days, a student can withdraw with 7 business days' notice and unused weeks are refunded pro rata. Trial terms are not published.

Branch: Online. The office is at 51 Goldhill Plaza #07-07.

Website: learnmojo.com

Ask at the trial: What will the standard 2027 fee be? Who teaches my child's group all year? How many SBQ and essay answers are marked each week?

SmartLab Education Centre

What is distinctive. A long-running multi-subject centre, operating since 1999 by its own account, that teaches both Pure History and Elective History, and Social Studies, to lower and upper secondary students on the MOE syllabus. It prepares students for the SEC and describes source-based question training and essay technique. It publishes a 2027 timetable.

Suits: a family in Bishan, Kovan, Marine Parade or Woodlands that wants Pure History and other subjects at one centre. May not suit: a family that wants a fee or class size online, or a JC student, since JC History is not listed.

Fees as published: Not published, and lesson length, registration and trial terms are not stated.

Branches: Blk 228 Bishan Street 23 #B1-71 for registration, with classrooms at Blk 243 and Blk 250 Bishan Street 22 (Bishan). Blk 204 Hougang Street 21 #02-113, beside Kovan MRT. Parkway Centre, 1 Marine Parade Central #13-03, at Marine Parade MRT Exit 1. Blk 818 Woodlands Street 82 #01-419.

Website: smartlab.com.sg

Ask at the trial: Is the class Pure or Elective History? Which branch runs History at my child's level? What is the monthly fee with GST, and how long is each lesson?

Sophia Education

What is distinctive. A multi-subject centre whose History page covers secondary History up to H1 and H2 A-Level History, and describes a former JC and NIE lecturer on its team without naming them. Tutors are described as having 7 to 20 years of teaching experience. Lessons are also offered online, and students get WhatsApp support for study questions.

Suits: a JC student who wants an H1 or H2 class near Dhoby Ghaut or in the heartland, with fees that include GST. May not suit: a family that wants the History tutor's name, class size or fee before calling, since none is published.

Fees as published: The History fee is not published in text. A S$30 registration fee applies to a new student's first subject. The site says the listed fee includes GST, with no materials fee and no deposit, billed every four lessons. A money-back policy within 14 days covers a first lesson that disappoints. Trial terms are not published.

Branches: 190 Clemenceau Avenue (Dhoby Ghaut MRT Exit B), Kembangan Plaza (beside Kembangan MRT), Beauty World Plaza (beside Beauty World MRT), The Midtown in Hougang, Woodlands Square, and Jurong East CPF Building (beside Jurong East MRT). The History page shows a different unit number for the Clemenceau Avenue address than the contact page, so confirm it before you visit.

Website: sophiaeducation.sg

Ask at the trial: Who teaches H2 History, and at which branch? What is the fee for four lessons, and how long is each one? How many students are in the class?

The Humanities Clinic

What is distinctive. A humanities specialist for Sec 3 and 4 and JC. Its History tutor and co-founder, Ms Teo Min Shuen, is a former government scholar with a Master's in International Relations from NTU, a first-class honours degree in Political Science and Economics from NUS, and over 10 years of teaching. Pure History runs weekly, while Elective History runs every two weeks, alternating with Social Studies. JC classes cover H2 History with weekly marked homework. The centre states that 90% of her students achieve As and Bs.

Suits: a student in the east or north who wants the same tutor from Sec 3 to JC2, or who needs Pure and Elective taught apart. May not suit: an H1 History student, since only H2 is listed, or a family that wants a trial before paying, since none is mentioned.

Fees as published: Secondary History and Social Studies S$340 for four 1.5-hour lessons. JC History S$390 for four 1.5-hour lessons. Registration, deposit and trial terms are not published.

Branches: The Flow @ East Coast, 66 East Coast Road #05-07 (Joo Chiat). A northern branch a few minutes' walk from Woodlands MRT, address given on request. Live classes on Zoom.

Website: thehumanitiesclinic.com

Ask at the trial: Does Ms Teo teach this class? How many students are in the slot now? For Elective History, how are SBQ and essay skills kept up in the alternate weeks?

The Urban Historian

What is distinctive. An online History and Social Studies school founded by a former MOE Humanities head of department with 20 years of MOE teaching, as its site describes. The 2027 schedule names two tutors, Mr Pillai and Mr Seelan, and lists separate classes for Sec 3 and Sec 4 Pure History, History Elective and Social Studies, plus Sec 1 and Sec 2 History. Classes for 2027 begin in November 2026, all on Zoom, and several Sec 2 slots were marked waitlisted or almost full. It also offers recorded lessons, notes and mock exams, and an AI practice tool.

Suits: a Combined Humanities student who wants a lower monthly fee and a former HOD's approach, from home. May not suit: a student who wants a classroom, or a JC student, since no H1 or H2 class is listed.

Fees as published (2027): Sec 3 and 4 Pure History, History Elective or Social Studies S$290 for four lessons, which the timetable shows as 1.5 hours each. A Social Studies and History Elective bundle is S$540 for eight lessons a month. Sec 2 History S$280 and Sec 1 History S$180, each for four lessons. Class size, registration, deposit and trial terms are not published.

Branch: Online. The office is at 160 Robinson Road #14-04, SBF Center.

Website: theurbanhistorian.sg

Ask at the trial: Which tutor teaches my child's slot? How many students are in it? Is there a trial lesson, and what does it cost?

Zenith Education Studio

What is distinctive. A large multi-subject chain whose Upper Secondary History page covers Pure and Combined History for Sec 3 to 5. Its History teacher, Evan Koh, has taught since 2020 and received the Dr Quek Jin Jong Book Prize at NIE. Lessons are 2 hours, once a week, with extra holiday lessons before major exams, plus notes, cheat sheets, past-year questions with model answers and an online learning system. Social Studies is a separate Upper Secondary course. The page sets out the 2027 History paper format.

Suits: a student who wants a branch close to home and a longer weekly lesson. May not suit: a family that wants a published class size, or a JC student, since JC History is not listed.

Fees as published: S$90 per 2-hour lesson for Sec 3 to 5 with one subject, before GST, and a deposit of S$360 per subject. A lower Humanities rate is advertised until 31 December 2026, which we have left out. The FAQ says there are no material or registration fees. Fees are payable through the year, including holidays. A trial class at no charge is offered, with limited slots.

Branches: Bishan, Bukit Panjang, Bukit Timah, Buona Vista, Jurong East, Jurong Point, King Albert Park, Kovan, Marymount, Paya Lebar, Potong Pasir, Serangoon, Tampines and Woodlands. The page says "12 Centres" but lists 14, and does not say which branches run History.

Website: zenitheducationstudio.com

Ask at the trial: Which branch runs History at my child's level, and who teaches it? How many students are in the class? Is it Pure, Combined or mixed?

What does the history exam actually test?

From 2027, students who entered Sec 1 in 2024 sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), and O-Level History is replaced by SEC History. A course built for the old O-Level papers should have been updated. Our SEC History SBQ guide works through each source question type with model answers, and our SEC syllabus codes list covers every subject.

How answers are givenTyped in a digital answer bookletNot stated in the syllabus

In every source-based case study, the first four sub-questions test single sources and the fifth asks the student to use several sources to reach a judgement. Case studies are set only on prescribed topics, such as Nazi Germany, the outbreak of World War II in Europe, the Cold War in Europe and the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and Pure History adds British Malaya. Essays are never set on the topic of that year's case study. G2 students sit their own G2 papers.

The Social Studies paper in Combined Humanities is 1 hour 45 minutes and 50 marks. Section A is a 35-mark source-based case study: four questions on single sources worth 25 marks, and a 10-mark question that uses several sources. Section B has two structured-response questions of 7 and 8 marks, set on a different Issue from the case study. Our Social Studies SBQ and SRQ guide covers that paper.

H2 History is syllabus 9174 for 2027. Older notes and past papers may carry the earlier code 9752. It has two 3-hour papers, and answers are typed in a digital answer booklet:

Paper 1: The Changing International Order, 1945 to 2000 (100 marks, 50%)Paper 2: Developments in Southeast Asia, independence to 2000 (100 marks, 50%)
Source-based case study (40 marks)Theme I, the Cold War: compare two sources (10), then test an assertion using all sources (30)Theme III, regional conflicts and cooperation: compare two sources (10), then test an assertion (30)
Essays (60 marks)One of two on Theme II (30) and one of two on Theme III (30)One of two on Theme I (30) and one of two on Theme II (30). Each essay compares at least three Southeast Asian countries

H1 History (8838) is one 3-hour paper of 100 marks on the Cold War and the modern world: a 40-mark source-based case study of up to five sources, and two 30-mark essays. At A-Level, H2 History carries up to 20 of the 70 University Admission Score points and H1 half that. Our A-Level grading system guide shows how the score is built, and our JC subject combination guide helps with the H1 or H2 choice.

Centre, home tutor or online?

A group class is usually the cheapest History hour. The most tailored hour is one-to-one, where every minute goes on one student's own source answers and essays. Here is how the published centre fees above compare with the rates on our rate card.

PointCentre or online group classOne-to-one home tutor
Cost per hourAbout S$45 to S$65 where fees and lesson lengths are published (centre fees above)Sec 3 to 4: S$35 to S$45 part-time, S$45 to S$65 full-time, S$65 to S$95 ex-MOE. JC: S$45 to S$60, S$65 to S$90, S$90 to S$130 (our rate card)

Answer markingPractice marked alongside a classEvery SBQ and essay marked in the lesson, line by line
Best forA student who wants a set routine, notes and timed practiceA student stuck on the fifth SBQ question, essay judgement, or a JC student with no H2 class nearby

A worked example: a Sec 4 student at a centre charging S$340 for four 1.5-hour lessons pays S$340 a month. One 1.5-hour lesson a week with a part-time tutor at S$35 to S$45 an hour costs S$52.50 to S$67.50 a week, or S$210 to S$270 for four weeks. With a full-time tutor at S$45 to S$65 an hour it costs S$270 to S$390. Many families use a centre for the weekly routine and add a few one-to-one sessions before the prelims, when one weak skill, such as the multi-source question, can cost a whole grade. Our history tuition page explains how we teach Pure History, Combined Humanities and H2 History one-to-one.

How to choose a history tuition centre

  1. Confirm the exact coursePure History (K330) and the History elective of Combined Humanities (K336) have different papers and content, and JC has H1 (8838) and H2 (9174). Ask whether the class teaches your child's course or mixes several.
  2. Find where the marks goLook at the last school paper. Lost marks on inference, reliability, the multi-source question or essay judgement each need a different fix.
  3. Ask who teaches and marksHistory improves through marked answers. Ask how many source answers and essays are marked each month, and by whom.
  4. Compare cost per hourTurn every quote into a cost per hour and add registration, deposit, materials and GST. Our table does this for the published fees.
  5. Book one trialAsk what it costs, and watch whether the tutor explains why an answer earns its level, not just what to write.
  6. Review after one termCompare the next school paper with the last. If the marks have not moved after about 8 to 10 lessons, ask the centre for a plan or switch.

Trial-lesson checklist

  • Is the class Pure or Elective, G2 or G3, H1 or H2, and does it follow the 2027 syllabus?
  • Who teaches the class all year, and who covers if they are away?
  • How many students are in this exact slot?
  • How many SBQ answers and essays are marked each week, and how fast are they returned?
  • Is the multi-source question practised with a clear judgement, not a summary of sources?
  • For Pure History and H2, has the student practised typing timed answers?
  • What does a missed lesson cost, and is there a recording?
  • What notice is needed to stop, and is any deposit refunded?

Common questions

How much does history tuition at a centre cost in Singapore?

Among the 10 centres we checked on 8 November 2026, published group History fees for Sec 3 to JC run from S$290 to S$400 for four lessons, or about S$45 to S$65 an hour where the lesson length is published. Four centres do not publish a usable fee, and registration, deposits and GST can add to the total.

What is the best history tuition centre in Singapore?

There is no single best centre. Herzen teaches only History, The Humanities Clinic and JC History Tuition suit H2 students, Ancourage Academy has the smallest classes, and The Urban Historian has the lowest published fee and a former MOE Humanities head of department.

Which centres teach H2 History?

Herzen Centre for History, JC History Tuition, The Humanities Clinic, Ancourage Academy and Sophia Education all publish H2 History. Herzen, Ancourage Academy and Sophia Education also list H1 History.

Which centres teach Combined Humanities with the History elective?

The Urban Historian, learnMOJO, The Humanities Clinic, Herzen, Ancourage Academy, SmartLab, illum.e and Zenith all teach the History elective, and most also teach Social Studies. The Urban Historian sells Social Studies and the elective as one bundle.

Which history centres have the smallest classes?

Ancourage Academy publishes 3 to 6 students and learnMOJO up to 5 online. Herzen, JC History Tuition and The Humanities Clinic's JC classes cap at 6, and The Humanities Clinic's secondary classes at 8.

Do history tuition centres offer trial lessons?

Herzen offers a 30-minute one-to-one trial at no charge and Zenith offers a trial class at no charge. Ancourage Academy's standard trial price is S$18, which its site shows as waived, and JC History Tuition offers a trial without a published price. The others do not publish trial terms.

What does the 2027 SEC Pure History exam include?

Pure History (K330) is two papers of 1 hour 50 minutes and 50 marks each. Each paper has a 30-mark source-based case study with five sub-questions and two 10-mark essays chosen from three, and answers are typed in a digital answer booklet.

What is the difference between Pure History and Elective History?

Pure History is a full subject with two papers covering Southeast Asia and the wider world from the 1870s to 1991. Elective History is one 50-mark paper on the 20th century world, taken with a 50-mark Social Studies paper as one Combined Humanities grade.

When should my child start history tuition?

Sec 3 is the usual start, when Pure History or the elective begins. A student who copes in Sec 3 may wait for the end-of-year exam to show which skill is weak, and JC students often start in JC1 once source-based case studies and essays begin.

Are these centres paid to be listed?
