What P1 Chinese asks for

P1 Chinese in 2027 follows MOE's 2024 primary Chinese curriculum, taught from the 欢乐伙伴2.0 textbooks that started with the P1 cohort of 2024. The focus is listening, speaking, hanyu pinyin and the four tones, and recognising and writing characters. Each lesson lists characters to recognise when reading (识读字) and a smaller set to write from memory (识写字): in the first lesson, ten to read and five to write.

P1 has no weighted assessments or exams, and schools report progress in words, not marks. So the year is about habits: reading aloud, saying full sentences and keeping up with the characters each week. Higher Chinese in P1 and P2 is offered only in selected schools, so ask your school whether it runs it.

Frequently asked questions

What should a P1 Chinese tutor focus on in the first term?

Hanyu pinyin and tones, the characters from each week's textbook lesson, and speaking in full sentences. P1 has no exams, so the first term is about building the habit of reading aloud and practising a little each day.

Is an undergraduate tutor enough for P1 Chinese?

Often, yes. P1 Chinese needs patience, clear pinyin and good spoken Chinese more than exam experience. A part-time or undergraduate tutor is the lower-cost choice at this level, and you can change tutors at no charge if the fit is wrong.

How much does a P1 Chinese tutor in Yishun cost?

The rate follows the level and the tutor type, not the town. For P1 Chinese it is S$25 to S$35 an hour with a part-time tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Worked example: a full-time tutor at S$40 an hour, for 1.5 hours once a week, costs S$240 for four lessons. There is no contract.

Can a tutor help if we do not speak Chinese at home?

Yes, and it is a common reason families start in P1. The tutor reads each textbook lesson with your child, practises pinyin and tones, and explains in English where your child is lost before switching back to Chinese. Ask for a short note after each lesson on what to revise at home.
