Pasir Ris primary schools

Six government primaries

All six Pasir Ris primary schools are government schools on MOE's list, and none is a SAP school. The nearest SAP primary is Poi Ching School in Tampines. P1 Chinese follows the same 2024 curriculum at every school, so the tutor works from the textbook your child brings home.

What P1 Chinese asks for

P1 Chinese in 2027 follows MOE's 2024 primary Chinese curriculum, taught from the 欢乐伙伴2.0 textbooks that started with the P1 cohort of 2024. The focus is listening, speaking, hanyu pinyin and the four tones, and recognising and writing characters. Each lesson lists characters to recognise when reading (识读字) and a smaller set to write from memory (识写字): in the first lesson, ten to read and five to write.

P1 has no weighted assessments or exams, and schools report progress in words, not marks. So the year is about habits: reading aloud, saying full sentences and keeping up with the characters each week. Higher Chinese in P1 and P2 is offered only in selected schools, so ask your school whether it runs it.

Frequently asked questions

Can the tutor explain in English when our child is lost?

Yes. Many P1 Chinese tutors explain in English where needed, then switch back to Chinese so your child keeps hearing and speaking it. Tell us when you book if no one at home reads Chinese, and we look for a tutor used to that.

What does a first P1 Chinese lesson cover?

Usually hanyu pinyin and tones, a few of the first textbook characters, and simple sentences about home and school. The tutor also sees how much Chinese your child already hears and speaks, and sets the pace from there.

How much does a P1 Chinese tutor in Pasir Ris cost?

The rate follows the level and the tutor type, not the town. For P1 Chinese it is S$25 to S$35 an hour with a part-time tutor, S$35 to S$45 with a full-time tutor and S$50 to S$70 with an ex-MOE teacher. Worked example: a full-time tutor at S$40 an hour, for 1.5 hours once a week, costs S$240 for four lessons. There is no contract.

Can a tutor help if we do not speak Chinese at home?

Yes, and it is a common reason families start in P1. The tutor reads each textbook lesson with your child, practises pinyin and tones, and explains in English where your child is lost before switching back to Chinese. Ask for a short note after each lesson on what to revise at home.
