JC or poly after the O-Levels: how do we choose?
Reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · Last checked · How we check facts
Short answer
Choose JC if your child wants the two-year A-Level route to a university degree and learns well through exams, and choose a polytechnic for a three-year diploma in a field they already like, with more project and practical work. For the 2027 JAE, a JC needs a gross L1R5 of 20 or better and a polytechnic a net ELR2B2 of 26 or better.

Questions that help decide
- Does your child have a clear field of interest, such as engineering, design or nursing? A diploma lets them start on it now.
- Does your child do well in written exams, or better in projects and practical work?
- Is a particular university course the goal? Check its admission routes for both A-Level and diploma holders.
- How did your child cope with the O-Level year? JC packs a heavy syllabus into two years.
2027 JAE dates
Students with a confirmed Polytechnic Early Admissions Exercise offer cannot take part in the JAE.
- O-Level results: 13 to 15 January 2027 (tentative).
- JAE application: opens at 4pm on results day, for about six days.
- Posting results: 9am, 2 February 2027 (tentative).
- JC and Millennia Institute students report on 3 February 2027.

What the score allows
Meeting the entry rule only lets your child apply. Each JC and each poly course has its own cut-off, set by last year's applicants. MOE's 2026 JAE ranges are the reference for 2027: our JC and poly guides list them, with calculators for L1R5 and ELR2B2.
What changes from 2028
Students who sit the SEC in 2027 apply through the 2028 Post-Secondary Admissions Exercise. For them a JC needs a gross L1R4 of 16 or better, and a polytechnic a net ELR2B2 of 22 or better.

Common questions
Can a poly graduate go to university?
Yes. Singapore's universities admit diploma holders to many courses. Check the admission requirements of the specific university course your child has in mind.
Is JC harder than poly?
They are hard in different ways. JC is a fast, exam-heavy two years. Poly spreads work across three years with projects, practicals and continuous assessment.
What if my child's L1R5 is above 20?
They cannot apply to a JC through the 2027 JAE, but may still qualify for Millennia Institute on L1R4, or for polytechnic courses on ELR2B2.
