Can my child change subject levels in secondary school?
Reviewed by Theon Teo, Founder · Last checked · How we check facts
Short answer
Yes. Under Full Subject-Based Banding, English, Mother Tongue, Maths and Science can start Sec 1 at a more demanding level than the rest if the PSLE AL in that subject is good enough, and any of them can move up later on secondary school results. Geography, History and Literature in English can move up from Sec 2.
At the start of Sec 1
Most subjects start at the level of the Posting Group: G3 for Posting Group 3, G2 for 2 and G1 for 1. English, Mother Tongue, Maths and Science can start higher based on the PSLE AL in that subject.
| Most subjects at | PSLE result in that subject | Can take it at |
|---|---|---|
| G2 | AL5 or better | G3 |
| G1 | AL5 or better | G3 or G2 |
| G1 | AL6, or AL A at Foundation | G2 |

Higher Mother Tongue
From the 2026 Secondary 1 cohort, Higher Mother Tongue no longer depends on the overall PSLE Score. A child with AL1 or AL2 in Mother Tongue, or a Distinction or Merit in Higher Mother Tongue, may take Higher Mother Tongue at the start of Sec 1.

Moving up later
- English, Mother Tongue, Maths and Science can move to a more demanding level based on how your child does in secondary school. Each school decides when and how, so ask the form teacher.
- From Sec 2, Geography, History and Literature in English can move up a level, based on aptitude and interest shown in Sec 1.

Moving to a less demanding level
MOE allows this in some cases. A child otherwise at G3 who took English, Maths or Science at Foundation level in the PSLE may take that subject at G2, decided with the school. A child who faces exceptional difficulty with Mother Tongue can take it at G2 or G1, depending on the PSLE grade.

Helping a child move up
If your child is close to the bar for a higher level, the first year's results matter. Weekly practice in that one subject, especially Maths, where the jump to algebra comes in Sec 1, gives the school clear evidence. Ask the school which tests it uses to decide.
Common questions
Does the Posting Group limit my child's subjects for all of secondary school?
No. It sets the starting level for most subjects. Under Full SBB, subjects can move up during secondary school based on results.
Will my child sit the O-Level?
No. Children starting Sec 1 from 2024 onward sit the Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC), first taken in 2027, which grades each subject at G1, G2 or G3.
Who decides the final level?
The secondary school, within MOE's rules. Parents can ask the school about options when Sec 1 starts.
