What moves your rate

  • Level. JC and IB lessons have the highest rates, then upper secondary, then primary.
  • Tutor type. Full-time tutors and former teachers sit in higher bands than undergraduates.
  • Track record. Real results with past students, shown in your bio, help you ask for the top of a band.
  • Exam years. Families in PSLE, SEC and A-Level years often look for more experienced tutors.

From an hourly rate to a monthly income

Most students have one lesson a week. Primary students usually book 1 to 2 hours a week, secondary students 1.5 to 2 hours, and JC and IB students 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A month of weekly lessons is about four lessons.

Your monthly income is your hourly rate times the hours you teach. Each student you add is another weekly slot, plus travel time for home lessons.

How your rate is set with TSS

You enter a preferred hourly rate for primary, secondary and JC students on your profile.

Each offer shows the rate for that assignment. You can say yes at that rate, ask for a different rate on the offer page, or say no.

The rate card above shows what families pay. The rate you are paid is the one in your offer, agreed with you before you accept.

How and when you are paid

TSS collects the lesson fees from the family, so you do not chase parents for payment.

Log each lesson on your tutor dashboard. TSS pays you for the month's lessons by the second week of the following month, by PayNow or bank transfer.

The first lesson with a new family is a paid trial lesson. How the trial lesson is paid is set out in the tutor agreement you sign.

Tutors work with TSS as independent contractors, so no CPF is deducted. Declare your tuition income to IRAS each year.

How to get more hours

  • List every subject and level you can teach well.
  • Tick the weekday times you are free. Weekday afternoons are the hardest slots for families to fill.
  • Reply to every offer quickly, yes or no, and accept the ones that fit.
  • Arrive on time, come prepared and update parents after lessons. Families who stay mean steady hours.
