Secondary 1 Maths is a transition year, and the transition is steeper than most parents expect. PSLE Maths is largely arithmetic and heuristic problem-solving; Sec 1 introduces formal algebra (variables, expressions, linear equations), negative numbers and integer operations, basic geometry and angle properties, and the first taste of coordinate geometry. Students who leaned on model-drawing through PSLE without building algebraic fluency tend to stall in Sec 1 Term 2, exactly when the school pace assumes algebra is secure.
