O-Level Pure Physics (code 6091) is the second-most taken science subject after Pure Chemistry and is a prerequisite for H2 Physics at JC, which is required for Engineering, Computer Science and most physical-science university courses. The format is two papers and a school-based practical. Paper 1 is multiple-choice (40 marks). Paper 2 is structured questions plus a Free Response section worth 50 marks combined.

The 6091 syllabus covers kinematics and dynamics, mass-weight-density, pressure, energy-work-power, thermal physics and kinetic model, light and waves, sound, static electricity, current electricity and DC circuits, electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction, atomic physics and radioactivity. The dominant gap-creators are kinematics graphical interpretation (especially distance-time and velocity-time graphs), DC circuit calculations (parallel and series combinations), and the Free Response application questions that combine multiple topics.

Our O-Level Pure Physics tutors run a structured Sec 3 to Sec 4 programme. The Sec 3 syllabus covers mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, energy, pressure), thermal physics and the introduction to waves and electricity. The Sec 4 syllabus then layers DC circuits, electromagnetism, electromagnetic induction and atomic physics. Tutors are MOE-trained Physics teachers, ex-MOE specialists, or NUS, NTU graduates with Physics, Engineering or related majors. The grade lift we typically see in our Pure Physics programme is 1.5 to 2 bands across one academic year.

The DC circuit calculation question on Paper 2 is the single highest-loss area for students at the C5 to B3 borderline. The pattern is consistent: a circuit diagram with two or three resistors in mixed series and parallel, plus a question asking for the current through one specific resistor. Students who try to solve it by raw simultaneous equations get tangled in algebra.

Students who first redraw the circuit as a clean series-parallel decomposition (combining parallel resistors first into an equivalent resistance, then computing the total current, then splitting back across the parallel branch) solve it in 3 to 4 minutes with full method marks. Our tutors drill this exact decomposition pattern across 15 to 20 past-paper variations, then layer in the harder potentiometer and Wheatstone bridge variants for A2 and A1 students.

Common O-Level Pure Physics Struggles We Fix

Pure Physics marks at the A1 and A2 bands are decided on application question handling and graphical analysis. The patterns we see most often:

Cannot identify which formula applies to an unfamiliar problem because formulas were memorised without conceptual grounding.

Velocity-time graph interpretation (gradient = acceleration, area = distance) is confused under exam pressure.

DC circuit calculations break down when parallel and series combinations are mixed in the same circuit.

Free Response answers explain the correct concept but use the wrong vocabulary, losing marks.

Electromagnetic induction questions confuse Lenz law direction prediction.

Practical-based questions (uncertainty estimation, anomalous result identification) are weak.

These are the gaps our O-Level Pure Physics tutors fix with structured topical sequencing and weekly past-paper drilling.

O-Level Pure Physics Programme Structure

A 6091-aligned topical programme spanning Sec 3 to Sec 4:

1. Mechanics (largest topic block)

Kinematics, dynamics, energy and pressure.

  • Kinematics (distance, displacement, speed, velocity, acceleration)
  • Distance-time and velocity-time graphical analysis
  • Newton laws of motion and forces
  • Mass, weight, density
  • Pressure (solids, liquids, atmospheric, gas)
  • Energy, work, power and conservation

2. Thermal Physics, Waves, Light, Sound

Bridging topics between mechanics and electricity.

  • Kinetic model of matter
  • Thermal expansion, transfer (conduction, convection, radiation)
  • Specific heat capacity and latent heat
  • Waves (transverse, longitudinal, frequency, wavelength)
  • Light (reflection, refraction, lenses)
  • Sound (frequency, amplitude, echoes)

3. Electricity and Magnetism (Sec 4 dominant)

The high-mark topic block in Paper 2.

  • Static electricity (charges, fields)
  • Current, voltage, resistance and Ohm law
  • Series and parallel DC circuits
  • Electrical energy and power calculations
  • Magnetism and magnetic fields
  • Electromagnetic effects (motor, generator)
  • Electromagnetic induction and Lenz law

4. Atomic Physics and Practical Skills

Smaller topic blocks but high-frequency questions.

  • Atomic structure and isotopes
  • Radioactivity (alpha, beta, gamma)
  • Half-life and decay calculations
  • Practical skills (apparatus selection, uncertainty, anomalous results)
  • Graph plotting and interpretation

Why Choose Us for Physics?

6091-Specialist Tutors

Our Pure Physics tutors teach the 6091 syllabus directly and know the SEAB Free Response marking rubric vocabulary.

Concept-First Teaching

Most students memorise formulas without understanding when they apply. We teach from first principles which makes application questions tractable.

Graphical Analysis Drilling

Velocity-time and current-voltage graph questions appear every year. We drill graphical interpretation in dedicated sessions.

What Our Parents Say

"Physics was my weakest science. I always knew the formulas but could not figure out which one to use. The tutor taught me to identify the question type first and then pick the formula. Final O-Level Pure Physics was A1."

- Joel

Sec 4 student from Bishan

"My daughter struggled with electricity for the entire Sec 4 first half. The tutor rebuilt the topic in 6 lessons and from there the second half made sense. Final grade was A2 from C5 mid-year."

- Mrs. Lee

Parent from Tampines
