PSLE Mathematics is the single hardest subject in Singapore primary education and the one most likely to determine secondary school placement. The format has been stable since the 2021 PSLE Achievement Level (AL) scoring reform: Paper 1 is 30 short questions worth 40 marks (no calculator), Paper 2 is structured and long-form questions worth 60 marks (calculator allowed). The AL grade boundaries shift each year but the practical reality is consistent.

AL1 requires a strong 90-plus mark on the combined paper, AL2 sits around 85, AL3 around 80, AL4 around 75. The gap between AL3 and AL4 is often 4 to 6 marks, and that gap is almost entirely about Paper 2 long questions, where multi-step word problems compound errors quickly. Our PSLE Math tutors focus precisely on this gap.

Lessons coach the heuristics MOE rewards (model drawing, units and parts, working backwards, supposition, before-and-after), train students to identify the correct heuristic in the first 30 seconds of reading a question, and run timed Paper 2 simulations against the published past papers from 2013 onwards.

The biggest mistake we see Primary 6 parents make is starting tuition only in January of P6, when the runway to PSLE in October is too short for a meaningful grade lift. The students who move from AL5 or AL6 to AL3 in our programme typically start by mid-P5 (June or July), which gives 12 to 14 months for foundation building, heuristic mastery, and progressive past-paper exposure.

Students starting only in P6 January can still see one band of improvement (for example AL5 to AL4), but the realistic ceiling drops sharply if the foundation gaps are wide. Our tutors are NIE-trained primary teachers, ex-MOE PSLE markers, or NUS and NTU graduates with strong Math backgrounds and primary-tutoring experience. Lessons are structured around your child's school topical assessment schedule (we will ask which primary school) so that tuition reinforces school content rather than running in parallel.

On the topical map, PSLE Math weights percentages, ratio, fractions and rate-and-speed unusually heavily because they appear together in Paper 2 long questions disguised as multi-step word problems. Geometry and area sit second on the weighting list, with the trickier questions involving overlapping shapes, units conversion and the area-difference technique that catches even strong students.

Our diagnostic tests in the first two lessons grade your child against the most recent five PSLE papers, surface the precise topic loss pattern (heuristic recognition versus computation versus answer presentation), and shape the rest of the term around closing those gaps. We hand parents a written progress note every six lessons that maps directly onto AL band movement so the investment is auditable, not hand-wavy.

Ai Tong, Henry Park, Nan Hua, Rosyth, Catholic High Primary and Tao Nan all run internal Math standards above the national mean, so for students at those schools the tuition target is a band higher than the school average rather than the national average.

Common PSLE Math Struggles We Fix

PSLE Math at the AL3 and above bands separates students on heuristics and exam technique, not raw ability. The patterns we see most often:

Strong on Paper 1 (short questions) but loses 20 to 25 marks on Paper 2 long questions because of multi-step error compounding.

Knows model drawing in theory but cannot apply it under exam pressure, especially on before-and-after, equal-value or remainder concept questions.

Spends too long on the first half of Paper 2 and runs out of time for the high-mark final two questions.

Computational errors with fractions, decimals and percentages on Paper 1 that cost 6 to 10 marks per paper.

Confusion between similar question types (such as ratio versus units-and-parts, or working-backwards versus assumption).

Anxiety on challenging or unfamiliar question types, leading to skipped questions on Paper 2.

Our PSLE Math programme drills these specific weaknesses with diagnosis-first lesson planning. The tutor identifies your child's exact pattern in the first two lessons and structures the rest around closing those gaps.

PSLE Math Programme Structure

A 12-month arc from mid-P5 through PSLE in October of P6, adapted to the student's starting band:

1. Heuristic Mastery

The MOE-recognised problem-solving techniques that Paper 2 long questions are built around.

  • Model drawing (whole and parts, comparison, before-and-after)
  • Units and parts (ratio, percentage, fractions in disguise)
  • Working backwards
  • Supposition (assumption method)
  • Pattern recognition
  • Make a list and elimination

2. Topic Coverage by MOE Syllabus

Full coverage of the P5 and P6 syllabus, weighted toward the high-frequency PSLE topics.

  • Whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages
  • Ratio, rate and speed
  • Algebra (P6 introduction)
  • Geometry, area, perimeter and volume
  • Angles, parallel lines, triangles
  • Data analysis, graphs, average
  • Pie charts and probability foundations

3. Paper 1 and Paper 2 Strategy

Exam technique that turns the same content knowledge into 8 to 12 more marks per paper.

  • Paper 1 timing (60 seconds per question average)
  • Paper 2 question dissection (read twice, mark key data, plan before solving)
  • Multi-step working layout for Paper 2 method marks
  • Final-15-minutes review strategy
  • Common mark-loss patterns and avoidance

4. Past Paper Drilling

Real PSLE papers from 2013 onwards and school prelim papers from top primary schools.

  • SEAB-released PSLE Math papers (10+ years)
  • School prelim papers (Nan Hua, Rosyth, Catholic High Primary, Henry Park, ACS Junior)
  • Topical compilations for targeted practice
  • Timed full-paper simulations from June of P6 onwards
  • Mark-scheme walkthroughs and self-grading discipline

Why Choose Us for Mathematics?

PSLE-Specialist Tutors

Our tutors teach PSLE Math specifically, not general primary Math. They know the AL grade boundary mechanics, the heuristic frequencies in recent papers, and the marking-scheme expectations for working shown.

Diagnosis-First Lesson Planning

The first two lessons are diagnostic. The tutor identifies the specific gap pattern (Paper 1 computation, Paper 2 heuristic application, exam timing, anxiety) before fixing the lesson plan.

School Topical-CA Alignment

We ask which primary school your child attends and align the lesson sequence to the school topical CA cycle. Tuition reinforces school content rather than running in parallel, which the parent feels in the school report card within 2 to 3 months.

What Our Parents Say

"My daughter was getting AL6 in P5 mid-year and we were genuinely worried. Started PSLE Math tuition in July of P5. By P6 prelims she was at AL3, and PSLE result came out as AL2. The tutor was patient with model drawing and we saw the breakthrough around 4 months in."

- Mrs. Goh

Parent from Hougang

"I always struggled with Paper 2 long questions, especially the ones with ratio and remainder concept. My tutor showed me a step-by-step way to read the question first and identify the heuristic before drawing anything. PSLE Math was AL2 in the end. Honestly the difference was just being able to see the question type clearly."

- Daryl

PSLE student from Punggol

Mathematics — Frequently asked questions

How is Mathematics graded under the PSLE system?

Mathematics is examined by MOE/SEAB. Our coaching maps directly to the official syllabus document — paper structure, weighting, and marking-scheme vocabulary are taught from real past papers and prelim sets, not generic textbook drills. See the SEAB / MOE source links at the bottom of this page for the canonical syllabus.

What does 1-to-1 Mathematics tuition cost in Singapore?

For PSLE level, typical Singapore home-tuition rates run SGD 30–60/hour. Undergraduate tutors sit at the lower end; full-time specialists and ex-MOE teachers at the upper end. Free trial lesson; re-match free if the fit is wrong.

Will the tutor follow my child's school topical assessment schedule?

Yes. Mathematics coaches synchronise with the school's CA / WA / prelim cycle. Send your child's term planner when you book — we match a tutor who can pre-empt the next Mathematics topic two weeks ahead, so school assessments and tuition reinforce each other.

How fast can Mathematics lessons start?

Non-urgent: tutor matched in 3–5 days, lessons within 7–10. Exam-period urgent (the 8 weeks before PSLE): matched within 48 hours, starting within 5–7 days. Niche combinations (e.g. PSLE HL/H3) sit at the longer end.

Online or in-home Mathematics lessons — which is better?

Both formats are supported at the same hourly rate. PSLE candidates who need heavy past-paper drilling often prefer in-home so a physical paper can be marked together; concept-coaching at Primary 5 and Primary 6 works well online via Zoom or Google Meet. We discuss the trade-off during the free consultation.
